Sophie McCafferty
Forest Play Teacher
Sophie grew up climbing trees, catching frogs, and getting her boots muddy on the ancestral, unceded land of the Kanien’kehá:ka people in Hudson and Saint-Lazare. After a few years away gathering knowledge in conservation, community building, decolonial feminism, and sustainable agriculture, she felt the call to return home, and Sophie happily answered. These days, you’ll find her joyfully reconnecting with the land and her neighbors through her work with the Hudson Food Collective and as a farm facilitator at Heartbeet Community Farm.
Sophie stumbled into the magic of forest school during the pandemic when she joined Lion et la Souris, an urban forest school in Montreal. She was instantly captivated by the deep learning that happens when children are free to explore the natural world with curiosity and wonder. She believes that helping children fall in love with nature early on is a powerful, and often underestimated, form of advocacy because when we care, we protect.
When she is not at the farm or in the forest, Sophie is likely up to her elbows in yarn enjoying fiber arts, paddling a canoe, walking diligently, or gardening with passion. She’s always up for a good laugh, a homemade meal, and a deep conversation. At Hudson Forest Play, she brings her love of balance, curiosity, and slowing down; and she hopes to pass a little of that magic on to others, too.
